Cities and Climate Conference 2017

19 - 21 September 2017
Potsdam, Germany

Cities are both focal points of human endeavour and major emitters, forming part of the global climate problem. While cities are characterised by an overwhelming complexity, they are also threatened by climate impacts. It is a challenge to develop cities into entities that consume fewer resources, emit less CO2 and pollution, are more resilient to the impacts of climate change, and which are more sustainable in general.

This conference will explore the latest advances in research and practice addressing climate change in cities, including issues of infrastructure, planning, governance, economics of adaptation, risk management, and their possible trade-offs and synergies with mitigation and sustainability objectives. Invited speakers will complement the conference programme.

“Cities and Climate Conference 2017” is the final conference of the RAMSES project and open to submissions from all relevant fields. RAMSES stands for Reconciling Adaptation, Mitigation and Sustainable Development for citiES.

Abstract submissions are now open. For the abstract submission form, click here.

October 2017

Investing in resilience: a necessity for European cities? What solutions?

11 October 2017, 09:00 - 10:45
Brussels, Belgium
Committee of the Regions, Jacques Delors, Room 51
This workshop will offer insights into how local authorities can design, prioritise and implement local resilience plans. Local authorities and cities, international organisations and the private sector will debate how we can work together to build resilience to withstand unexpected disruptions and drive long-term viability. With an ever more interconnected global economy, the risks to our communities from climatic events, cyber-attacks and risks to human health are multiple. Effective partnership is key to resilience planning. The workshop will hear about how our cities are dealing with global risks through smart resilience responses across Europe. Local government bodies operate at the closest level to citizens and play a key role in responding to crises and emergencies, delivering essential services and investing in the economic and social wellbeing of their communities. But moving from policy to practice requires effective action and this workshop will provide useful insight into the main issues from a global to local perspective.

Thessaloniki 546 40, Greece
Thessaloniki City Hall, Leof. Vasileos Georgiou 1
The Stakeholder Dialogue will bring together the SMR project Tier 1 and 2 cities and their stakeholders to exchange knowledge and experience with the latest group of cities to join the project: Tier 3. The event will be held in the City Hall of Tier 3 city of Thessaloniki and will be opened by Thessoniki's Mayor Yiannis Boutaris. The Stakeholder Dialogue will introduce the project's five tools in the context of an intensive exchange of best practices and good examples from the participating cities. Each session will see voices from the SMR Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities explaining how they implemented successful measures to boost resilience in their cities.

The Stakeholder Dialogue will be the official launch of the SMR Tier 3 programme, where the project is welcoming a new group of cities into the project to validate the project tools and the overall management resilience management process proposed by SMR as a 'European Resilience Management Guideline'. Four tools are already available to cities: the Resilience Maturity Model, Risk Systemicity Questionnaire, Resilience Engagement and Communication Tool and Resilience Policies Tool. The final tool, the City Dynamics Model, will be made public before the event.

Practical information

A social programme will be provided for project partners and Tier 3 cities following the event, free of charge. Participation is free for representatives of local governments, citizens and representatives of non-profit organisations. Tools that enhance operational guidance and decision making for local resilience

The RESIN and SMR tools
16 November 2017, 13:30 - 15:00
Bonn, Germany
Bonn Zone @ UNFCCC COP23
Resilience is a local process, which cities need to drive. This requires skills and methodologies that are often not at hand in city administrations. In order to enhance cities’ capacity to resist, absorb and recover from the effects of climate change, two EU-funded projects, RESIN and Smart Mature Resilience are developing standardized tools to support the design of climate adaptation and resilience strategies. The workshop will present the tools developed by these two projects (including tools for assessing risks, selecting adaptation options and evaluating the resilience maturity of a city) and how these contribute to the overall resilience building process.
